MOT annual assessment - CPD - Annual Training
Training and assessments
You must stop carrying out MOT tests if you have not passed by the end of the training year. Your MOT testing account will be suspended.
The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has changed how MOT training is done.
The 5-year MOT tester refresher course has been replaced by annual training and an assessment.
How MOT annual training works
You must do MOT training and pass an assessment between 1 April and 31 March each year to keep your tester status.
- Take at least 3 hours of training each year.
- Record your training.
- Take your annual assessment.
- Record your assessment result, usually done automatically upon completion of assessment.
If you’ve qualified to be a MOT tester, with an external training provider (not with DVSA), within the current training year you don’t need to complete MOT annual training and assessment for this year
Train with London MOT Training 2023/2024
Group B (class 3, 4, 5 and 7 vehicles)
If you test vehicles in group B, you need to know about:
- MOT test procedures
- registering a vehicle for an MOT test
- using MOT testing equipment
- the MOT inspection manual for cars and passenger vehicles
We are providing the required training and annual assessments for only £120.00. This consists of a 3 hour training session and 2 attempts at the assessment. At the end of the training day we shall provide you with a record of your training as proof that you’ve done enough.
You must keep a record to show any DVSA staff who visit your vehicle testing station (VTS). You have to keep records for 5 years.
If you don’t keep training records, it can:
- affect your testing status
- lead to disciplinary action being taken against you
Take the annual assessment
You have to pass an online MOT annual assessment to keep your testing status. The test login will be supplied by us, you may do the test at your VTS, home or at our site if you choose the training and assessment package for £120.00
If you don’t take an assessment during the training year, it could:
- affect your testing status
- lead to disciplinary action being taken against you
The assessment is 30 multiple-choice questions to be answered in 1 hour with and 80% pass mark.
Questions are based on:
- topics in the current year’s syllabus
- current MOT special notices
- general MOT testing knowledge
You can use these during the assessment:
- official documents, such as the MOT inspection manual or special notices
- your own notes
If you pass the assessment, you’ll get a certificate. You can check if your certificate has been uploaded in the ‘Annual assessment certificates’ section of your MOT testing service profile. Contact your training provider if it’s not been recorded correctly.
BOOK YOUR SPACE BEFORE THE DEADLINE ON EVERY YEAR
After Assessment
After your assessment
The pass mark is 80%.
You get a certificate if you pass your assessment, which you can download and print. Keep it with your training record at the VTS(s) where you work.
If you do not pass, there’s no limit on how many times you can take the assessment during the same year, however if you fail the MOT Annual Assessment twice, a new test must be purchased.
You must stop carrying out MOT tests if you have not passed by the end of the training year. Your MOT testing account will be suspended.
Failure to complete Assessment
If you do not manage to pass the annual assessment in the training year you must do the training and pass the annual assessment on the next year’s topics. For example, if you did not pass the 2021 to 2022 assessment you will need to pass the 2022 to 2023 assessment.
Once you’ve passed, you need to request and pass an MOT demonstration test. MOT demonstration tests can be carried out at our VTS if required. Your account will then be unsuspended:
Call DVSA to request your demonstration test. You’ll need:
- your MOT testing service user ID
- the MOT centre number of where you want to take the test
